-Abstract-
Double superior venae cavae in association with the completely symmetrical nature of
azygos tributaries were revealed in a Korean adult male cadaver.
1. The left superior vena cava was formed by the union of the left internal jugular
and subclavian veins immediately dorsal to the left sternoclavicular joint. This vein
coursed vertically downward through the superior mediastinum lateral to the aortic arch,
anterior to the root of the left lung, and finally bent downward and medialward behind
the left auricle to enter the coronary sinus.
2. The caliber of the left superior vena cava near the coronary sinus was slightly
larger than that of the right superior vena cava.
3. These was absent any demonstrable connections between both superior venae
cavae.
4. Both azygos veins began opposite the upper border of the third lumbar vertebra
from the posterior wall of the inferior vena cava as a single common trunk to the right
of the aorta and thoracic duct.
5. The diameters of the right azygos vein and its tributaries were larger than those of
the left azygos vein and its tributaries.
6. Except for the occurrence of the left superior vena cava, the heart appeared to be
normal regarding its topography and structures.
