Abstract


Normal rabbits were sensitized with mixed antigens.These were made of cephalin or lecithin from ox myocardium combined with egg white or bovine serum. They were also sensitized with each of the, substances individually. After eighteen days, antibody formation was confirmed by positive Arthus reactions. The rabbits were sacrificed one 0 seven days after the c allengiag injection (of the svne m).terial) and vascular changes of the heart and after parenchymal organs (lungs,liver, spleen, adr;nals, & kidneys).
Changes in E.C.G., serum protein, S.G.P.T. and blood (C.B.C.) were also observed and compared with control.
The results were as follows:
L The microscopical picture, were with those described in part 1, but less significant in general.
2. Edema, fibrinoid swelling or fibrinold degeneration of the interstitial tissue of myocardium were most intensive in the egg white mixed antigen group and more ii cephalic mixed antigen group thin in lecithin mixed antigen group.
In the rabbits recaivin.- lecithin alone no reactions were observed.
In the control group slight changes were demonstrated in the egg white injected rabbits, but none in the rabbits received bovine serum.
Within seven days after challenging injection all the findings disappeared.
3. The disintegration and dissolution of cardiac micro fibers oeat7rrad is all ca3as except in the bo-
vine serum injected control group. These were more pronounced in the e;; white mixed antigen group than in the bovine serum mixed antigen group, and more in the lecithin group than in the cephalin group. Even in the lecithin group, however, this
reaction disappeared seven days after challenging injection.
4. Granuloma formation(Aschoff body type) was significant in the lecithin group, but very slight in the cephalin group. This appeared in the bovine serum mixed cephalin group and in the egg white and bovine serum mixed lecithin group, changes disappeared in six or seven days after the challenging injection.
In the single antigen group no changes were observed.
5. Thickening and fibrinoid degeneration of arteriolar walls were observed in all cases. Slight fibrinoid thrombus formation was demonstrated in the bovine serum mixed lecithin group.
6. Vascular changes of other organs(lungs, liver, spleen, adrenals, & kidneys) were similar to those of the heart. Slight degenerative changes ware observed in parenchymal cells.
7. Small round call infiltration occurred not only in perivarcular regions but also formed sani.tary foci in all organs including heart.
8. The Arthus phenomenon was stronger in the bovine serum mixed antigen group than in the egg white mixed antigen group. It was stronger in the lecithin group than in the cephalin group. These reactios pareiled the histological changes. In the single antigen group it was irregular, but stronger in the egg white group than in the bovine serum group. ´ No difference ´was found in cephalin and lecithin groups.
9. Changes in E.C.G. were relatively slight compared with the histological findings. These were more pronounced in the lecithin group than in the cephalin group. Slight alterations of ST segment
and T wave were registered both in the limb lead and in the chest lead.
10. Total protein and r-globulin were lacrased in general, especially in lecithin group.
11. Changes in S.G.P.T. and blood(C.B.C).within normal limits.
Author, therefore, concluded that, allergic myocarditis occurs if normal rabbits are sensitized with mixed antigen of egg white or bovine serum added to myocardial ph>spholipids as schlepper. Heart changes were more severe with lecithin than cephalin, and more with egg white than bovine serum.
