Abstract


Movement of potassium between plasma and various tissues was observed in carbon monoxide inhalated rabbits. Rabbits inhalated 5 volume percent carbon monoxide gas for 2 minutes followed by the inhalation of normal room air. Blood samples and tissue samples (liver, skeletal muscle, diaphragm, cardiac muscle, lung, spleen, stomach and small intestine) were taken at the end of 2 minutes carbon monoxide gas inhalation, 7, 45, and 90 minutes after inhalation.
16 rabbits served as control, 16 for the 2 minutes sample, 14 for 7 minutes, 14. for 45 minutes and 15 rabbits for 90 minutes samples. The following results were obtained,
1. Upon carbon monoxide gas inhalation, serum potassium concentration showed a marked elevation and returned to normal level gradually by normal room air breathing.
2. Carbon monoxide inhalation resulted in a remarkable increase in potassium content of cardiac muscle and recovered to normal level rapidly by room air inhalation.
3. Potassium content of skeletal muscle and diaphragm decreased by carbon monoxide gas inhalation and recovered to normal level progressively.
4. Significant losses of potassium in liver and spleen were observed by carbon monoxide inhalation and not show a complete recovery to normal level within 90 minutes.
5. In lung, stomach and small intestine potassium content remained unchanged during the entire time course of experiment.
6. Movement of potassium between plasma and various tissues in response to carbon monoxide inhalation . were discussed.
