Abstract

The author measured the acetabu´ar angles of 332 hips in 166 normal Korean infants (79 males and 87 females), applying the method of Kleinberg and Leterman, and that of trigonometry on the x-ray pictures of antero-posterior views of the pelvis in the neutral position; the following results were obtained,
1. The value of the acetabular angle was highest in the first month and then decreased markedly until the third month. Afterward there was no significant decrease until the twelfth month. The above tendency was observed in both sexes and there was no definite difference between the right and left side.
2. Although there was no significant difference in the value of acetabular angles on the right and left sides in both sexes, before the second month the figure for the right side was higher than that for the left in both sexes, and after the third month the opposite result was obtained.
3. Even though the value of the acetabuar angle in the female was generally higher than that in the male, the values for first month on the right side and that of the first, eighth and tenth month on the left side were statistically significant.
4. Because of the above findings, the author arbitrarily divided the monthly measurements, of acetabular angles into three groups, that is, the value in the firstt month, second month and the values between the third to twelfth months. A significant difference was noted in the value of the acetabular angle between the first month and that of the third to twelfth months.
5. Mean values for the acetabular angle in the first month x-s as 26 degrees in the male and 28 degrees in the female; in the second month they were 23 degrees for both sexes; in the third to twelfth months the mean values were 20 degrees in the male and 21 degrees in the female.
6. Ninety-five per cent confidence limits for the acetabular angles were 23?29 degrees in the male and 23?32 degrees in the female in the first month; in the second month they were 17?26 degrees in the male and 19?26 degrees in the female; in the Third to twelfth moths they were 19?21 degrees in the male and 20?22 degrees in the female
7. The upper and lower limits in the normal distribution of the acetabular angle were 18?34 degrees in the male and 15?41 degrees in the female in the first month; in the second month, they were 10?34 degrees :in the male and 11?33 degrees in the female; in the third to twelfth months they were 13?23 degrees in the male and 14?29 degrees in the female.
8. The lower value of the acetabular angle in Korean infants corresponds to a lower incidence of congenital dysplasia of hip in this race.
