Abstract

The author has observed the variations in the pattern of origin of the arteries of the lower extremities of 112 Korean infants(50 males, 62 females)and 50 adults (36 males, 14 females). The results are as follows:
1. In 60. 0% of the cases common stem for superficial epigastric and superficial ilium circumflex arteries and separate branches of the external pudendal artery arise from the femoral artery.
2. The number of the external pudendal artery were observed three in 63. 3%, two in 31. 7% and one in 5%.
3. The medial and lateral femoral circumflex arteries and deep femoral artery were observed to arise from the truncus profundo -circum flexus perfectus in 45.3% and it was the most common pattern. 4. The upper bifurcation of the popliteal artery is observed in 4.9%.
5. In 50 -60% of the cases the medial and lateral superior genicular arteries and middle genicular artery were observed to arise in a common stein. The medial and lateral inferior genicular arteries arose from the stem independently in 99%.
6. Abnormally small size of the caliver of the anterior tibial artery was observed in 3.4%. 7. The posterior tibial recurrent artery originated from the anterior tibial artery in 99%. 8. Absence of the posterior tibial artery is observed in 2. 2%.
9. The number of the medial anterior malleolar artery was one in 79% and two in 21%.
10. The number of the lateral anterior malleolar artery was one in 73% and two in 27%.
11. The branching of the medial anterior malleolar artery were observed generally at the proximal portion than the lateral anterior malleolar artery.
12. The number of the medial tarsal artery was one in 26%, two in 71% and three in 3%.
13. The number of the lateral tarsal artery was one in 5%, -two in 93% and three in 2%.
14. The first dorsal metatarsal artery arose in 87% from the dorsalis pedis artery, in 13% from the lateral plantar artery. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th dorsal metatarsal arteries originated from the arcuate artery in 43y,, 37% and 327, respectively, and from the lateral plantar artery in 35%, 32% and 39% in that order.
15. The L, 2nd, 3rd and 4th plantar metatarsal arteries arose from the medial plantar artery in 58%, 33% and 1%, and from the lateral plantar artery in 42%, 67%, 84% and 98% in that order.
16. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th plantar metatarsal arteries arose from the deep plantar artery of the dorsalis pedis artery in 81%, 70%, 52% and 27%, and from the lateral plantar artery in 19%, 3%, 48% and 73%in that order.
17. The variations in the pattern of origin of the arteries of the lower extremity in Koreans -,,,ere observed to be similar to those o: Europeans and Japanese.
