Abstract

A case of sparganosis was reported and a review of recent literature related to this case was presented in the aspects of pathogenesis, clinical course and histopathology.
This case was that of a 61 year-old Korean man, a farmer, who had nodular lesions in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdominal wall, both inguinal and perianal regions and scrotum. On the surgical exploration, the nodular lesions were found to consist of edematous and indurated subcutaneous tissue. From the lesions 12 worms were obtained. The worms were ribbon-like in shape and pale milk-white in color, showing pseudosegmentation.
The patient had a history of eating raw snake on several occasions for curative purpose of lumbago. He had believed that the snake was particularly effective in combatting illness.
The tissue for pathologic examination was studied and was found microscopically a granulomatous inflammation with heavy infiltration of eosinophils.
