Abstract


The author studies 239 specimens obtained from patients with chronic paranasal sinusitis and made observations of the distribution and amount of acid mucopolysaccharides in relation to the histopathological types of chronic paranasal sinusitis.
The following results were obtained.
1. In the edematous type the epithelial layer contained more acid mucopolysaccharides than that in the infiltrative and fibrous types did. The basement membrane contained a small amount of the acid mucopolysaccharides, less than found in either of the other two types. There were small amounts of a complex acid mucopolysaccharides mixed with proteinaceous materialsvisible in the subepithelial layer. Band like arrangement of those complex materials were seen in the wall of -the blood vessels more in this type than in the other two types.
2. In the infiltrative type the epithelial layer contained less acid mucopolysaccharides than the edematous type but more than the fibrous type. The basement membrane contained more acid mucopolysaccharides than in the edematous type. However the subepithelial layer contained more of the complex acid mucopolysaccharides mixed with proteinaccous materials than either the edematous and fibrous types. The band like substances of those complex materials in tha blood vessels were fewer in this type than in the edematous type.
3. In the fibrous type the acid mucopolysaccharides ,were more scanty in the epithelial layer than in the edematous and inf iltrative types. The basement membrane contained more of this aicd mucopolysaccharides than seen in either of the ether two. The complex mixture of the acid mucopolysaccharides and the proteinaceous materials were seen in the subepithelial layer less in this type than in the infiltrative type, but more than seen in the edematous type, and band like substances of those complex materials in the blood vessels were almost invisible but fibrillar materials were seen more than in any other type.
4. Acid mucopolysaccharides seen to be related to the defense mechanism due to long continued stimuli. Moreover they may be involved in the pathogenesis of the hypersensitivity reaction.
