Abstract


The author investigated the effects of various metal ions and NaN3 on the Na+-K+ activated ATPase activity of microsomal fraction from human placenta, and obtained the following results;
1. The placental microsomal fraction contained the Na+-K+ activated ATPase in the presence of Mg++.
The ATPase activity increased in proportion to the protein content in the fraction.
2. Hg++, Cd+´+, Zn++ and Ag+ markedly depressed the ATPase activity while Cu++ had a little effect on the ATPase activity, and pb++ and Co++ had no effect.
3. Mn++ depressed the ATPase activity in the presence of Mg++, but it markedly activated the ATPase activity in the absence of Mg F+
4. Li+ and 13a++ had no effect on the ATPase activity and Ca++ in lower concentration activated the ATPase in the absence of Mg++.
5. Sodium azide markedly depressed the ATPase activity.
