Abstract


The author, using white rabbits, studied the changes of storage iron concentration by the methods of Yoneyama-Konno and Bruckmann-Zondeck in the liver, spleen, kidney, bone marrow and duodenum in normal untreated and thyroidectomized groups not receiving colloidal iron; and in other normal untreated and thyroidectomized groups receiving colloidal iron.
The following results were obtained.
1. In the thyroidectomized rabbits, a decreasing tissue storage iron concentration was observed. It may be due to a reduction of the preserving capacity of tissue storage iron.
2. When colloidal iron was given intravenously in the thyroidectomized rabbits, the preserving capacity of tissue storage iron was markedly reduced in the tissues rich in RES cells such as the liver, spleen and bone marrow.
On the other hand this phenomenon was not noticed markedly in the tissues storing iron mainly in the epithelial cells such as the kidney and duodenum.
