Abstract

The author observed changes of tissue storage iron concentration of the liver, spleen, renal cortex and medulla, bone marrow, and the duodenum in the bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits, and in the rabbits variously substituted with adrenal hormone following the removal.
The results were analysed statistically and discussed, and obtained the following conclusion.
1. The concentration of storage iron of the liver and kidney decreased in the bilaterally adrenalectomized
animals. This phenomenon is thought to be due to bilateral adrenal insufficiency.
2. The concentration of storage iron of the spleen tended to decrease in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals. It seems to be a matter of further study.
3 The concentration of storage iron of the bone marrow changed not remarkably in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals. It is thought that the metabolism of storage iron of the bone marrow is not influenced by the adrenal glands.
4. The concentration of storage iron of the duodenum increased in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals. This is thought to be the result of an increased iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract due to blood loss during the surgical procedure of the adrenalectomy.
5. The circulating R. B. C. number and Hb. level decreased slightly in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals. This is thought to be not due to decreased function of adrenal glands, but due to the blood loss during operation.
6. When the emulsion of adrenal glands was administered in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals the decrease of storage iron of the liver and kidney were inhibited completely.
7. When cortisone was administered in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals the decrease of storage iron of the kidney was inhibited selectively
8. When epinephrine was administered in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals the decrease of tissue storage iron following the removal was not inhibited.
9. When adrenal glands was autotransplantated in the bilaterally adrenalectomized animals the decrease of tissue storage iron following the removal was not inhibited. It was suggested that this might be resulted
from in adequate compensation of the auto transplantation.
10. According to the above, the adrenal glands might play a role in the metabolism of storage iron chiefly by means of glucocorticoids and mineral corticoids.
