Abstract

The author studied the effects of barium chloride, ergoklin, vasopressin, histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine on the nerve-free smooth muscle of the chick amnion, using nitroglycerin, papaverine, and atorpine as smooth muscle relaxants, benadryl as antihistamine, and phenoxybenzamine and morphine as
5-hydroxytryptamine blockades. The following was a summary of his findings.
i) The 10th to 16th day amnion of the chick manifested spontaneous motility in about 80% of the preparations.
2) The motility of the chick amnion was stimulated by BaC12 and ergoklin. The stimulatory action of the drugs was antagonized by nitroglycerin and papaverine. Nitroglycerin and papaverine inhibited consistently the motility of the amnion.
Atropine, in high concentration, increased the motility of the amnion.
4) Oxytocin and vasopressin inhibited the motility of the amnion.
5) Histamine increased the motility of the amnion. The stimulatory effect of histamine was antagonized by benadryl. Benadryl itself, in high concentration, inhibited the motility of the amnion.
6) 5-HT stimulated the motility of the amnion. The stimulatory action of 5-HT was not blocked by morphine, but blocked by phenoxybenzamine. Phenoxybenzamine and morphine had stimulatory effects on the amnion.
