Abstract


The author studied the action of autonomic drugs on the nerve-free smooth muscle of the chick amnion and obtained the following results: -
1) The motility of the chick amnion was stimulated by acetylcholine and by physostigmine, the latter being more active.
2) The stimulatory effects of acetylcholine was augmented in the presence of physostigmine.
2) Atropine, which stimulated the amnion in high concentrations, blocked the stimulatory effect of acetylcholine, but not blocked that of physostgmin
4) Epinephrine, norepinephrine, isoproterenol and phenylephrine inh-b´ted the motility of the anmion in the following order:
Isoproterenol ? epinephrine? norepiephrine phenylephrine.
5) Phenoxybenzam:ne, which stimulated the amnion, d´d not affect the inhibitory action of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and isoproterenol, but reduced that of phenylephrine.
6) Inderal, which simulated the amnion in low concentrations, but inhibited it in higher concentrations, reversed the inhibitory action of epinephrine and norepinephrine,blocked that of isoproterenol, and reduced that of phenylephrine.
7) The inhibitory action of epinephrine, norepinephrine, isoproterenol, and phenylephrine was blocked by a combination of phenoxybenzamine and inderal.
8) It seemed that the chick amnion had both alpha excitatory and beta inhibitory receptors, with beta inhibitory receptors predominating.
9) Both nicotine and hexamethonium stimulated the amnion in low concentrations, but inhibited it in higher concentrations. DMPP increased the motility of the amnion consistently.
10) The stimulatory effects of nicotine and DMPP were not antagonized by hexarnethonium.
