Abstract

The authors studied the effect of hypofunction of RES on the tissue response to Cryptococcus neoformans. They inoculated the cultures of the C. neoformans isolated from a patient died of generalized cryptococcosis to normal rabbits the RES of which had been blocked with colloidal suspension. They, further, inoculated the cultures to normal rabbits and treated with cortisone acetate. They observed the tissue lesions present in the experimental animals grossly and microscopically and obtained the following results.
1) The rabbits not receiving any treatment before and after the inoculation of the C. neoformans revealed granulomatous lesions characterized by nodular accumulation of large mononuclear cells and epitheloid-cells in the lung, liver, testis, adrenal gland, cornea, and central nerve system.
2) The rabbits treated with colloidal suspension before the inoculation of the cultures of the C. neoformans revealed gelatinous lesions characterized by accumulation of gelatinous material produced by the causative agents in the lung, liver, kidney, spleen, adrenal gland, and bone marrow.
3) The rabbits treated with cortisone acetate after the inoculation of the cultures of the C. neoformans revealed granulomatous lesions essentially identical with those observed in the rabbits simply infected with the fungi.
4) The two basic types of tissue reaction to the C. neoformans seemed to correlate to the functional state of RES in the experimental animals.
