Studies on the Normal Spinal Curvature in Korean Students

Abstract


The author, using Kawakami´s spinometer, measured the normal spinal curvature of 1440 Korean students from 7 to 18 years old in Pusan area and the following results were obtained.
I. The mean and standard deviation of-, the anterior cervical curvature at the various classes of Korean students was as follows;
186, 0° ±3.08° in boys and 185,7° ±3,17° in girls at the junior classes of primary school, 184, 9°±3, 32° in boys and 185, 0°±2, 79° in girls at the senior classes of primary school, 185,8°±3,47° in boys and 188, 1°±4, 35° in girls who are middle school students, and 187,4°±3,89° in boys and 184,3°±3,13° in girls who are high school students respectively.
2. The mean and standard deviation of the posterior thoracic curvature at the various classes of Korean students was as follows;
158,0°±3,47° in boys and 157,4 °±3,02° in girls at the junior classes of primary school 157, 6°±4, 00° in boys and 156,9°±2,93° in girls at the senior classes of primary school, 156, 6°±3,72 °in boys and 156,7°±3,22 °in girls who are middle school students, and 157,8° ±33,70° in boys and 157,3°±3,09° in girls who are high school students respectively.
3. The mean and standard deviation of the anterior lumbar curvature at the various classes of Korean students was as follows;
196, 7° ±3, 86° in boys and 196,7° +3,38° in girls at the junior classes of primary school, 198,5° ±2,95° in boys and 197,4° ±2,99° in girls at the senior classes of primary school, 196,5° ±3,55° in boys and 193,9° ±3,0° 5 in girls who are middle school students, and 193,2° ±3,35° in boys and 197,9° ±2,49 ° in girls who are high school students respectively.
4. The author found no significant differences in his results of the investigation of the spinal curvatures of Korean students with those already published by Kawakami on Japanese between the ages of 7 and 18 years of age.
5. No correlative relation was established between the spinal curvature and the height, seated height, weight and circumference of the chest in the age group of 7 to 18 years old.
