Abstract

In order to study the control mechanism of the adrenals upon circulating leucocyte counts, the author observed the circulating leucocyte counts in the groups of normal rabbits and of the bilaterally adrenalectomized rabbits before and after the administration of ACTH, cortisone or prednisolone.
The author evaluated the results of the experiments statistically, and drew conclusions as follows:
I . In the adrenalcctomized rabbits the pseudoecsincphil counts decreased markedly in number, but
the lymphocyte ccunts inere:sed relatively in number.
2. It was recognized that the effects of ACTH, cortisone and prednisolone cn the leucocyte counts in the normal rabbits were essentially similar to each other, and that the effects were characterized by an increase of pseudoeosinophil counts and a continuous decrease of lymphocyte counts.
3. In the adrenalectomized rabbits the circulating pseudoeosinophil counts increased after the administration of ACTH. The effects of ACTH on the pseudoeosinophil counts in these animals decreased gradually following the adrenalectomy, while the lymphocyte counts of these animals did not react to ACTH entirely.
4. In the adrenalectomized rabbits the circulating pseudoeosinophil counts failed to respond to cortisone and to prednisolone.
5. In the adrenalectomized rabbits the circulating lymphocyte counts revealed mild response to cortisone and to prednisolone.
6. The results above suggest that the adrenal gland rray be responsible for the abnormality of leucocyte counts by ACTH, cortisone or prednisolone.
