Abstract


The author studied the effects of chlorpromazine, cytochrome C and picrotoxin on the ATP contents of skeletal muscle and heart muscle from rabbits, and obtained the following results:
1. The ATP contents of skeletal muscle of ral bits was 8.8±0.270 fimol/g tissue and that of heart muscle was 2.7±0. 112 ftmol/g tissue.
2. The ATP contents of skeletal muscle and heart muscle were reduced markedly by chlorpromazine.
3. Cytochrome C and picrotoxin had no marked effect on the ATP contents of skeletal muscle and heart muscle.
4. When chlorpromazine was administered in combination with cytochrome C, the ATP content of
skeletal muscle increased slightly, but those of skeletal muscle was not changed.
5. When chlorpromazine was given in combination with picrotoxin, there was no marked change in the ATP contents of skeletal muscle and heart muscle.
6. It is, therefore, concluded that the depressing effect of chlorpromazine on the ATP contents of skeletal and heart muscle are abolished by cytochrome C and picrotoxin.
