Abstract

The author studied, using rabbits, to ascertain whether chemical mediators may have a concern in the pathogenesis of serum sickness. The serum sickness was induced in normal rabbits by a single intravenous dose of egg albumin equivalent to 250 mg. per kg, of body weight. These animals were given intravenously the chemical substances such as epinephrine, serotonin, histamine or prednisolone after the injection of egg albumin. Administrations of these substances were timed to coincide with the periods when the circulating antigen and antibody were at peak levels. The animals were sacrificed by air embolism on the 15th day after the injection of egg albumin, and were studied grossly and microscopically.
The findings thus obtained were compared with those of the control animals which were injected intravmously with egg albumin alone. The conclusion drawn there from were as follows:
Epinephrine and serotonin acceralated the development of serum sickness in incidence and in severity, while prednisolone suppressed it. Histamine, however, had no such effects.
