Abstract

The author´s intention was to investigate the antigenicity of sulfonamides. Sulfapyridirie was incorporated with egg albumin in acidic solution to form a sulfapyridine-protein complex and the complex thus obtained was emulsified with Freund´s complete abjuvant and used for sensitization of rabbits and guinea pigs. The animals were sensitized by injecting intracutaneously, subcutaneously, and smearing onto the scarified dorsal skin once a week for 7 weeks. Seven days after the last sensitization the experimental animals were bled partially, and the sera were tested for the presence of antibody or antibody-like substances to sulfapyridine. Various serological reactions including precipitation, complement fixation, complement consumption, passive hemagglutination, hemagglutination inhibition, modified hemolytic reactions, and Prausnitz-Kustner reaction were performed. Three days after the withdrawal of the blood, of sensitized animals one rabbit and one guinea pig which showed positive serological reactions were subjected to the tests for the presence of allergic states to the sensh´ zer. The results obtained are - summarized as follows:
1. No precipitin and complement fixing antibodies against sulfapyridine were detected by ⓒuchterlony and
complement fixation tests, but turned out to be positive complement consumpton test in vitro.
2. In the sera of the two positively sensitized animals passive hemagglutination test showed a positive
reaction and the modified hemolytic test as well as hemagglutination inhibition test also gave a clear
cut positive reaction.
3. In the two positively sensitized animals showed the skin reactions to sulfapyridine, sulfadiazine, NaPAS and PABA in the animals sensitized with sulfapyridine-protein complex were positive. This suggests that among the chemicals tested there are common antigenic properties which may be responsible for the cross reaction.
