Abstract

The author has estimated the fecal pH and lysozyme activity of 54 Korean infants(36 healthy infant,
6 malnourished infants, and 12 premature infants) to evaluate the relationship of these. And also fecal nitrogen was measured to determine its influence after the administration of lysozyme in 26 subjects. All of these studies were carried out with and without administration of lysozyme.
The selected subjects were inpatients or outpatients of the Pediatric Departments of Pusan University Hospital, llshin Hospital, Pusan Children´s Charity Hospital, and the Save the Children Fund Clinic in Pusan City. And they were grouped as follows in order to compare each group.
a. Breast, mixed, and artificially-fed healthy infants
b. Artificially-fed healthy infants and malnourished infants
c. Artificially-fed healthy infants and premature infants
Results were as follows:
1. In the healthy infants the fecal lysozyme activity of the breast fed infants was highest, and that
of the mixed-fed infants were higher than that of the artificially-fed group.
2. There were no apparent differences in the fecal pH and lysozyme activity between the artificially-fed healthy infants and the artificially-fed malnourished infants.
3. There were no marked differences in the fecal pH and lysozyme activity between the artificially-fed healthy infants and the artificially-fed premature infants.
4. The artificially-fed premature infants showed some decrease of the fecal lysozyme activity compared with that of the breast-fed healthy infants.
5. By a single oral administration of the lysozyme no marked change of the fecal lysozyme activity was obtained in any group of subjects.
6. Results suggested that there was a trend or tendency to increase the fecal lysozyme activity when the fecal pH was lowered.
7. There was no marked effect on the fecal nitrogen excretion by a single oral administration of lysozyme.
