Abstract


The author studied the changes of cholinesterase activities in blood cell, serum and lung tissue along with the correlation between the pulmonary capillary permeability and the cholinesterase activity in experimental acute, pulmonary edema. Acute pulmonary edema in dogs was induced by various methods. The therapeutic effect of PAM, known as a cholinesterase reactivator in pulmonary edema, was also investigated.
The results were as follows:
1. The cholinesterase activities of blood cell, serum and lung tissue were decreased in manifested acute pulmonary edema.
2. In manifested acute pulmonary edema, a correlation was seen between the decrease of cl-.olinesterase activities in blood cc-it, serum and lung tissue, and the degree of pulmonary capillary permeability.
3. In the sodium thiosulfate injected group, the pulmonary edema was mild in degree despite large amounts of fluid infusion with pneumonectomy. The cholinesterase activities of blood cell, serum and lung tissue were almost the same as before injection.
4. In the group given repeated injections of PAM (after blockage of the reticuloendothelial system, pneumonectomy and fluid infusion in large amounts), there was mild to absent pulmonary edema when compared to the group without PAM injecction. The cholinesterase activities of blood cell, serum and lung tissue were increased following PAM administration.
5. PAM is expected to be valuable as a preventive and therapeutic agent in the treatment of pulmonary edema.
