Abstract

Adult female rabbits, weighing 2 kg, were used to investigate the effect of castration and steroid hormone administration in vivo and in vitro on the cholinesterase activities of cerebellocortex, cerebrocortex, uterus, liver, and heart muscle.
Experiment in vivo.
Rabbits were divided into 5groups as follows:
Group 1 Non castrated normal female
Group 2 Castrated
Group 3 Castrated and injected with estrogen (6, 000 units)
Group 4 Castrated and injected with progesterone (1, 200 units)
Group 5 Castrated, and injected with estrogen (3, 000 units) and progesterone (600 units)
The total dose of hormones was injected in divided doses for 3 days, and animals were sacrificed 3 days after the final injection. The organs were taken cut immediately after sacrificing. Cholinesterase activity was determined by.Ammon´s method. The result of this investigation was as follows:
1. The cholinestrase :activity in the tissues of a non-castrated rabbit was the highest in the liver,
and decreased in cerebellocortex and cerebrocortex, while the activity in uterus and heart muscle was
thee lowest.
2. The cholinesterase activity in heart muscle, and cerebrocortex of rabbits was increased, while the activity in liver and uterus was decreased due to the castration.
3. When castrated rabbits were .injected with estrogen intramuscularly, cholinesterase activity in cerebell
ocortex, cerebrocortex, liver and uterus was decreased as compared with rabbits only castrated.
4. When castrated rabbits were injected with progesterone intramuscularly, cholinesterase activity in cerebellocortex, and liver was decreased as compared with only castrated, while the activity in the uterus was increased by the hormone.
5. When estrogen plus progesterone at the same time were injected into castrated rabbits, cholinesterase activity in cerebrocortex, liver, and heart muscle was decreased, but these hormones had no effect on effect on cholinestee-ase in cerebellocortex and uterus.
Experiment in vitro
Adding estrogen, androgens; and pregnane°series to the warburg´s flask with the enzyme extract,
cholinesterase activity was determined, e-nd the following results were obtained:
1. In cereballocortex, the addition of estrone, estradiol-3-metyl ether, dehydro~piandrosterone, and progesetrone caused a decrease in cholinesterase activity as compared with the castrated control group,
2. In cerebrocortex, the addition of estronee, estradiol-3-methyl ether, androsterone, progesterone, 5p-pregnan-3a, 20a-diol, and cortisol caused a decrease in cholinesterase activity, while etiocholanolone caused an increase in the activity.
3. In uterus, the addition of estrone, estradiol-3-methyl ether, and cortisol caused a decrease in
activity, but etiocholanolone and androsterene increased the activity.
4. In liver, the addition of estradiol-3-methyl ether, progesterone, 5o-prcgnan-3a, 20a-diol, and cortisol caused a decrease in activity.
5. The addition of estrone caused a decrease; but androsterone, etiocholanolone caused an increase in the activity in heart muslce.
