Abstract

The author studied the lymphocytosis-inducing factor appearing in the liver and spleen of the rabbits treated with prednisolone, cortisone or ACTH.
The author prepared water-soluble extracts of the tissues of the liver and spleen obtained 6 hours after intravenous administration of 5 mg prednisolone per kg. body weight, intraperitoneal of 5 mg cortisone per kg. body weight or intravenous of 3 units of ACTH per kg. body weight and tested their effect on the circulating leukocyte counts.
The data thus obtained was discussed and the following conclusions were drawn.
1. The water-soluble extracts prepared from the tissues of the liver and spleen of normal rabbits had no influence upon the lymphocyte counts in normal rabbits
2. The extracts prepared from the tissues of the liver and spleen which were obtained 6 hours after the administration of prednisolone, cortisone or ACTH had an increasing effect of circulating lymphocyte counts. The lymphocyte-increasing effect of the extracts was most prominent in the prednisolone treated cases, the next was cortisone treated and most feeble in ACTH treated cases.
On the basis of the above it was suggested that a lymphocytosis-inducing factor may be produced in the liver and spleen of the animals rendered lymphocytopenia by hyperfunction of the pituitary-adrenal system.
