Abstract

The author investigated, using rabbits, the role of the kidney in iron. Ten mg. per kg. body weight of colloidal iron was administered intravenously in the normal rabbits, in the unilaterally nephrectomized rabbits, and in the rabbits administered with nephrotoxic poisons such as mercury and glycol. Plasma iron and storage iron in the liver, spleen, bone marrow and renal cortex and medulla were estimated at the first, third, fifth and seventh day after the injection of colloidal iron.
The results of the studies were discussed, and the following conclusions were obtained.
1.. When colloidal iron was given intravenously in the rabbits with renal damage, plasma iron and storage
iron concentrations of the liver, spleen, bone marrow and kidney were decreased more slowly than those
in the normal rabbits.
2. When colloidal iron was given intravenously in the rabbits with renal damage, the storage iron concentration of kidney was higher than that in the normal rabbits. This could be attributed to decreased excretion of the stored iron through the damaged kidney.
3. On the basis of the above the kidney seems to participate actively not only in storage of iron, but also in excretion of iron.
