Abstract

A study on the quantitative count bacteria in urine obtained from 100 normal subjects and 54 patients
with various urinary were performed during last 4 months. The results are as follows:
1.The incidence of ´the bacteriuria (bacterial count A= 101 000/c. c. ) in single sampling was one per cant in normal group, 216 per cent I patient group and 71. 4 per cent in pyelonephritic patient.
2. Wide daily fluctuations in bacterial count of urine were found in different samples obtained during one to ten days: A decrease of as mmh as M8 per cent and an increase of 1400 nor cent.
3.A normal group an additional true bacteriuja of two cases were found in repeated counts of two to six times.
4. The incidence of true bacteriuria following indwelling catheterization revealed fifty per cent in 24 hrs, 88.3 per cent in 2 days and a WWI per cent in longer than 3 days of indwelling.
5.. The relationship between urinary bacterial count and pH was not significant in normal group, but in patient group 62.5 per cent the true bacteriuria was found in alkaline urine and 37.5 per cent in acid urine.
6. Pyuria was found in 51.7 per cent nd prcrtzinuria in 61. 1 per cent of true bacteriuric patients.
7. Those bacteria which --revealed in quenntitat.va baMmIl count in were Gram positive cocci and Gram negative bacilli on Gram staining. ire ratio of their incidence between the former and the latter was I I in normal group, and v 1 in patient group: e. The incidence of Grarnn negative bacilli in patient group was higher than in normal group.
8. We conclude that the quantitative bacterial count in urine is a useful adjuvant in diagnosis of the urinary tract infections though there are a few exceptions. Repeated bacterial count in urine is, however, often necessary in orde to discover the true bac-Leriuria.
