Abstract
Studies were made of the portal vein in 96 cases of normal infant cadavers (28 male and 68 female).
Results of the tributaries and the meaatrement of the length and caliber of the veins were as follows:
1. The inferior mesenteric vein drained into the splenic vein in 41.7% of cases; into the angle of union of the superior mesenteric vein and the splenic vein in 17.7% of cases; and into the superior mesenteric vein in 40.7% of cases.
2. The left gastric vein drained directly into the portal vein in 53.1% of cases; into the angle of union of the portal and splenic veins in 25%; and into the splenic vein in 21.9% of cases.
3. Regression coefficients of the length and caliber of the portal vein and the calibers of the splenic vein, superior and inferior mesenteric vein, and the left gastric vein were 0.72, 0.13, 0.11, 0.09, 0.05 and 0.05 respectively.
