Abstract
In an attempt to elucidate the physiological mechanisms of action of general depressants, this study was undertaken to investigate the effects of general depressants on phosphorylase activity of rat brain in vitro and in vivo, and the results are summarized as the follows.
1. Brain phosphorylase activity was markedly depressed by acetone, octanol and chloroform in vitro.
2. Ethanol and pentanol had little influence on phosphorylase activity of rat brain in vitro.
3. Brain phosphorylase activity was markedly depressed by ethyl ether and penthrane, although its depressive potency was much marked in the penthrane than ethyl ether in vitro.
4. Ethyl ether, chloroform and halothane had no influence on phosphorylase activity of rat brain whereas penthrane depressed markedly in vivo. Above results suggest that phosphorylase activity of rat brain may be affected by the actions of chemicals used as general depressants.
