Abstract

In order to study of the histochemical change of mucosubstances in the matrices of them, the laryngeal, tracheal and bronchial cartilages were observed in the chick embryos at 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19th incubation day and those in the chicken at 1, 4, 7, 10th day after hatching. The mucosubstanoes were stained with alcian blue(pH 2.5 and 1.0), PAS, alcian blue(pH 2.5 and 1. 0)-PAS and aldehyde fuchsin(pH 1.7)¡©alcian blue(pH 2.5).
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Amount of mucosubstances in the matrices of the cartilage dur ing developmental period were differ¡©ent in each cartilages and the regions of the matrices of each cartilages, but were more concent¡©rated in the matrices of the true cartilages than those in the precartilages, and also histochemical change of the mucosubstanoes; were different in each cartilages, generally, were occured in the m¡©atrices of the cartilages of postdevelopmental period than those of early developmental period.
2. The properties of the mucosubstances- in the matrices of the precartilages during developmental period which the laryngeal cartilages contained only a large amount¢¥ of acid mucosubtances, but the tracheall cartilages contained a small amount of both acid and neutral mucosubstances, but more of acid muco¡©substances, and the bronchial cartilages contained only a very small amount of neutral mucosuib¡©stances.
3. The mucosubstances in the matrices of the true cartilages during developmental period which all_ cartilages contained a large amount of both acid and neutral mucosubstances, and more of acid¡©mucos ubstances, but were different the regions of the matrices, i. e. , the mucosubstances in lacunar wall of all cartilages contained only a large amount of acid mucosubstances, and those in interlacu¡©nar matrices of early developmental chick embryos contained only a small amount of acid mucosub¡©stances, but those in interlacunar matrices of postdevelopmental chick embryos and chicken contained a amount of both acid and neutral mucosubstances, which those in subperichondrial matrices containe¡©donly a amount of neutral mucosubstances.
4. The acid mucosubstances in the matrices of the precartilage during developmental period which the tracheal and bronchial cartilages contained only sulfated mucins and those in the matrices of the true cartilage of developmental embryos and early developmental chicken contained only sulfated mucins,.but those of postdevelopmental chicken were composed of sulfated and nonsulfated mucins, while those of the laryngeal cartilages contained only sulfated mucins in early developmental embryos, but were composed of sulfated and nonsulfated mucins in postdevelopmental embryos and chicken. Hist¡©ochemical change of acid mucosubstances were early occured more the laryngeal cartilages than thetracheal and bronchial cartilages.
