Abstract
In this study the auther observed histochemically alkaline and acid phosphatase activity and PAS postive basement membrane in the non-neoplastic and neoplastic epithelial cells in 23 cases of the chronic cervicitis and in 9 cases of the cervical carcinoma. The results thus obtained were discussed and summarized as follows.
1. In the most chronic cervicitis, the alkaline phosphatase reaction of the non-neoplastic epithelial cells is mildly to moderately positive, while in the most cervical carcinoma that of the neoplastic cells is slightly positive or negative.
2. In the most chronic cervicitis, the acid phosphatase reaction of the non-neoplastic cells is slightly positive or negative, while in the most cervical carcinoma that of the neoplastic cells is mildly to moderately positive.
3. In the most chronic cervicitis, the PAS positive basement membrane is intact, while in the most cervical carcinoma that is lost.
On the basis of the above, the auther suggests that the histochemical observation of alkaline and acid phosphatase reaction and the basement membrane of biopsied tissues might be helpful in the diagnosis of cervical malignant epithelioma.
