Abstract

Hstochemical studies were undertaken in respect of the influence of the starvation on the compositions omd amounts of the mucosubstances in rat gastric mucosa, and traced the change brought by experimmta1 plod, namely, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours of starvation, respectively. The mucosubstances were stained Wdan blue(pHl. 0 and 2.5), PAS, alcian blue(pH 1.0 and 2.5)-PAS, aldehyde fuchsin(pH 1. 7)-aian WUe(pH 2.5), alcian blue(pH 1. 0)-alcian yellow(pH 2.5).
The results obtained were as follows:
1. The mucosubstances of the gastric mucosa in normal groups were composed of acid and neutral muoo-sabstances, but more of acid mucosubstances in the cardia and fundus and more of neutral mucosubstances in pylorus.
2. The acid mucosubstances in the surface epithelial cells of cardia and fundus and mucous neck cells contained only nonsulfated mucins, but those in gastric pit epithelial cells and pyloric glands contained only sulfated mucins in normal groups.
3. The mucosubstances in the gastric mucosa in the starvated groups decreased with the passage of starvated time. The compositions of the mucosubstances in the gastric mucosa of the starvated groups was not considerably changed, but the amounts of those decreased gradually with the passage of starvated time. The surface epithelial cell and mucous neck cells, generally, more decreased considerably acid than neutral mucosubstances, but more decreased considerably neutral than acid mucosubstances. in the gastric pit epithelial cells and pyloric glands.
