Abstract

The author has selected 50 meaningful monosyllabic words which were frequently used in usual conver¡©sation. The selected words were recorded on magnetic tape by a woman speaker and were evaluated the propriety as a list for speech audiometry.
Pure tone measures were made at octave intervals by the ascending thr:shold methods with Nagashima T-72 audiometer. The speech articulation scores were made through AKAI 1720w tape recorder and Nagashima T-72 audiometer system, which allowed the stimulus level to be controlled through attenuation.
Speech articulation curve, speech reception threshold and maximum articulation scores were estimated in normal (54 cases) and various types of hearing loss which were conductive (53 cases), noise (46 cases), aging (29 cases) and streptomycin poisoning (43 cases). The relationship between the pure tone average on speech range and speech reception threshold was compared. The pure tone average on speech range has been based on the "three-frequency average" of hearing acuity at 500, 1000, and 2000Hz ( 500+1000x2+2000 )/4
The results obtained were as follows:
1. Articulation score of the words list was more dependent cu coun.snts than vowels.
2. There was no significant relationship between constitution of syllable structure and phonemes of testing words in speech articulation scores, when testing words were selected in order of frequency in conversation.
3. Comparison of speech articulaton curve in normal and various types cf hearing loss were as follows:
1) in general, the slope was rapidly ascending to 65 dB HL, 2) in normal and conductive group, the slope was ascending by increasing sound pressure level, 3) in noise dcafress, streptomycin poisoning deafness, and presbycusis group, descending from a certain limiting sound pressure level.
4. The mean of difference scores between SRT and PTA¢¥ S was 20 dB in normal, conductive, and presbycusis group, but 15 dB in noise deafness and in streptomycin poisoning deafness group.
5. There was significant relationship between SRT and PTA¢¥ S in various types of hearing loss except normal group.
6. Author¢¥s 50 meaningful monosyllabic words list was valuable for speech audiometry.
