Abstract

An epidemiologic and clinical study was made inwards 2458 kindergartners in 32 kindergartens of 8 districts, Seoul area during May 1963. As a result of this study following conclusions were obtained.
1. Numbers of kindergatners who were attacked by unusual exanthems were 205, 112 in male and 93 in female,
2. No significant difference is observed in numbers of incidences by districts.
3. Attack rate was 83.4, that of male 83. 1 and that of female 83.7.
4. Secondary attack rate was 5.32 per cent and no significant difference was observed between both sexes in cases attacked secondarily but high incidence was in younger age groups.
5. Monthly incidence was highest in April, and it decreased as the order of March, February, May and January.
6. The incubation period was between 3 to 7 days.
7. Prominent symptoms were fever, cough, headache, diarrhea and abdominal pain in addition to the rash during course of illness.
8. I´vlost exanthems were characterized by maculopapule in character. Its duration which were persisted 1 to 6 days occupied 84.4 per cent, its distribution was shown more frequently in upper part of body surface than lower part of it and the developmental pattern was cephalocaudal in 78.5 per cent.
9. In the course of these unusual exanthematous diseases, it occupied 60.5 per cent in monophase, 20.5 per cent in diphase and 19.0 per cent in multiphase.
10. Although the viral study was not performed, the-etiological agent of these unusual exanthems which-were studied epidemiologically and clinically by author is highly suspected as ECHO virus Type 9 on the--six bases of its world-wide distribution, coincidence of incubation period between authors and that of previous foreign reports, high incidence in younger age group, having predilection of distribution of rash, cardinal symptom, on an upper body surface, coexis- - tence of fever and rash, and having diphasic of multiphasic courses during illness.
