Abstract

Chlorpromazine was given to 50 healthy Korean males in three different methods: 1) Intramuscular injection of 50 mgm.
2) Intravenous injection of 50 mgm of chlorpromazine diluted in 500 cc of physiologic saline solution.
3) Intravenous injection of the same amount diluted in 500 cc of 5% dextrose solution.
Cerebrospina fluid pressure was measured with water type manometer, connected with lumbar puncture needle continuously for 3 hours. The patient was placed on recumbent position on a hard table during measurement.
Decrease of pressure was observed in all cases regardless of method of administration of the drug. Ranges of decrease were 33.4 mm of water in average in the first group, 35.1 mm in the second, and 32.2 mm in the last group. Blood pressure, body temperature, pulse and respiratory rate decreased during experiment as expected. Reports stating chlorpromazine is useful in treatment of head injury, cerebral hemorrhage, intracranial tumour and inflammation in t e aspect of reduction of intracranial pressure were supported by this experiment.
