Abstract

In medical literature many observations concerning peritoneal absorption in both normal and aseptic states have been reported, while very few have appeared about septic peritonitis.
Acute pyogenic peritonitis was produced experimentally in dogs, by introducing staphylococcus, and the electrophoretic patterns of peripheral blood and peritoneal exudates were studied with the following results.
1) The change of total protein showed that it the electrophretic pattern decreased in blood and increased in exudate at the initial stage, but later reversed to increase in blood and decrease in exudate.
These observation could be explained by the interaction of peritoneal absorption. As the flucctuation was more pronounced in pyogenic peritsnitis, it may indicate that the absorption is more accelerated in that state than in aseptic peritonitis.
2) Reversion of the initial change as described above (of protein value in bood and exudate), occured after alapse of 12 hours in peritonitis.
3) The total protein in abdominal exudate, showed at all times, a lower value than the serum protein in acute pyogenic peritonitis.
4) Contrary to the initial decrease and later increase of the A/G ratio in the blood, the opposite reaction occured in the exudate.
