Abstract

The majority of cystic tumors of the neck represent congenital cysts such as thyroglossal cyst, branchial cyst and cystic hygroma, except inflammatlry lymph nodes. However, there have been sporadic reports of cystic tumors of the neck which contain circulating venous blood. They are called juglar phlebectasia, venous angiomas or hemolymphangiomas. They usually occur in young people.
They manifest themself as crstic tumors which gradually increase in size without causing subjective symptoms. The tumors ususlly increase by Valsalva maneuver. They ultimately attain such a size as to cause discomfort. The most valuable diagnostic procedure is venography.
The author had an opportunity to treat two cases of cystic venous tumors which occurred in a 19 year old male and a 17year old female. The phlebolithes had been shown in both tumors by chest X-Rays. The venogram showed these tumors to be of venous origin and communicating with the external jugular vein.
The tumors were resected successfully.
A brief review of the references was made.
