Abstract


Studies on the mechanism of blood pressure control in blood loss and/or hypotensive condition are well established by many research workers. However, there is no standard datum on blood perssure change following decrease in circulating blood volume because degree and phase of blood pressure fall depend mainly on the time required for the blood loss.
Present study is attempted to observe the phase and degree of blood pressure change following very acute blood shedding and re-transfusion. Arterial blood was shedded through canula connected into the femoral artery in pentothal sodium anesthetized dog and arterali pressure was monitored by means of pressure transducer connected to the femoral artery and laboratory potentiometric recorder.
Results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. Following shedding of one-third of circulating blood within 6 minutes, arterial pressure fell to 30% level of control pressure.
Re-transfusion of shedded blood 60 minutes after the shedding rasied arterial pressure from 40 mmHg to 80 mmHg which is equivalent to 61% of arterial pressure in healthy condition.
2. The rate of arterial pressure fall following blood shedding showed tendency of gradual increase according to the progress of blood shedding. On the other hand, the rate of pressure rise following re-tansfusion was comparatively rapid at early stage and became slower according to the progress of re-transfusion.
3. It seemed to authors that hypoxic damage occvred during minutes of hypotensive state to the myocardium, central nervous system and to the vascular tissues and for this damage, arterial pressure could not be recovered to control healthy level even after the re-transfusion of shedded blood.
