Abstract

Bezoars are encountered in the study very infrequently because of their rarity in incidence. Bezoars usually fall into 4 categories; the trichobezoar, which is composed of hair, the phytobezoar, composed of fruit and vegitable product, trichophytobezoar, which is the mixture of former two, and concretion, which is formed by the ingested chemical materials or drugs.
Recently, authors treated two cases of phytobezoar (diospyrobezoar) surgically and this article is to report these two cases along with literature review. Case 1, 9 year-old boy, had diospyrobezoar in the stomach, which was palapted intermittently but failed to visualize by Upper G.I. Series. The bezoar was removed by gastrotomy. The other, case 2. 19 year-old girl, had intestinal obstruction and perforation of the terminal ileum due to impaction of the bezoar causing localized peritonitis. She had resection of the terminal ileum and a part of the ascending colon with end-to-end anastomosis.
According to the review of the literature, it was found that phytobezoar, especially diospyrobezoar is more common than trichobezoar in Korean while reverse is true in Occidentals.
