Abstract

1. An observation of bacterial antibiotic susceptibility of 242 bacterial strains isolated from 196 cases which were admitted to the department of surgery of Chonnam University during the past 4 years from 1964 to 1967 is presented.
2. For etiologic microorganisms, staphylococci were most frequently isolated, 46.3% in incidency. The order in incidency of isolation of other bacteria is Escherichia (16.5%), paracolon (13.6%), proteus (8.3%) and pseudomonas (5.8%).
3. The coagulase (+) staphylococci were sensitive to kanamycin (88%), neomycin (85%), erythromycin (74%), leucomycin, chloromycin and aureomycin in order and the least sensitiev to penicillin (10%).
4. Proteus were sensitive to neomycin, kanamycin and streptomycin in order but relatively resistant to other antibiotics. Pseudomonas were also sensitive to neomycin and kanamycin but resistant to all of otehr antibiotics. The order in sensitivity of paracolon to antibiotics is neomycin, kanamycin, streptomycin and chloromycin. For escherichia, kanamycin, neomycin, streptomycin were sensitive in order.
5. The resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics was increasing as years go by. The more antibiotics were used, the more antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains developed.
