Abstract

Leucocyte counts and pathohistological findings were observed on 200 cases of appendicitis from 1st.
Apr. 1969 to 30th. Jun. 1972 at Seoul Red Cross Hospital. The following results were obtained.
1. Cases of moderate leucocytosis(10,000∼20,000/㎣) were 106(53%) and normal range(6,000∼
8,000/㎣) were 24 (12%).
2. Catarrhal 61 (30.5%), suppurative 67 (33.5%), phlegmonous 40(20%), gangrenous29(14.5%),
and chronic type 3 (1.5%) were classified pathohistologically.
3. Elevated leucocyte counts showed more severe inflammatory process and the cases of severe
inflammation were increased in the state of elevated leucocyte counts.
4. Neutrophil counts were elevated in 43 (60.6%) of 71 cases and lymphocytes were decreased in
33 (46.5%) of 71 cases.
5. Average duration of symptom before admission was 3.2 days.
6. There was no relationship between symptom duration and process of inflammation probably due
to administration of the antibiotics individually.
7. 96 cases (48%) were younger age from 11 to 30 and 10 cases (5%) were over the sixty.
8. In the age over sixty the cases of severe inflammation were increased.
9. The cases of moderate leucocytosis were most common in all the group of duration and the cases
of leucocytes over 20,000/㎣ were 18.2% (8 cases) of 44 in the group over 72 hours.
