Abstract

The overlooked retained stone in the biliary system is still vexing most surgeons because of it considerable morbidity and mortality if re operation should be inevitable. Although the operative: cholangiography has been credited with reducing the incidence of retained stones1), the incidence still remains in considerable percentage(average 7%) in recent series2)
For the purpose to remove the overlooked retained stones in the biliary duct nonsurgically, the author has performed T-tube irrigation with physiological solution such as benzalkoniurn chloride solution and heparin in 11 cases of retained stones. We have treated six cases with 0.01%´benza chloride solution and five cases with a heparinized saline irrigation drip continuously; through the T-tube at a dose of 25, 000 units of heparin per- 250.0c. of saline every eight hours: for about seven days.
In cases with benzalkoniun chloride solution, we could not retrieve the stones satisfactorily. How ever, in the five cases with heparin irrigation, we experienced satisfactory result with removal of
almost all of the retained stones without any considerable complications. The relating literatures were also reviewed.
