Abstract

Sigmoid volvulus is rare in most countries except eastern Europe, but, it has, apparently increased in frequency during ¢¥the past several decades at, the same time the mortality risk of sigmoid volvulus has remained constant at more than twice risk of mechanical intestinal obstruction.
During past 3 years, 11 cases of volvulus of sigmoid colon were experienced in Presbyterian Medical Center in Jeonju. There 4 female and 7 male. Only 2 cases were subacute progressive type.
One case of sigmoid volvulus was associated with strangulation of smallbowel due to unusuallileosigmoid knotting. We performed primary resection and anatomosis of the sigmoid colon in one case. Mikulicz resection in 6 and operative detorsion in 4.
Two cases of nonoperative decompresion were tried but all were failed. There were only one case of moribund discharge who devolped cardiac arrest during surgery.
