Abstract
Twenty cases of radiation proctitis in the period of 11 years from 1964 to 1974 confirmed by biopsy at Yonsei Medical Center were reviewed and analyzed.
According to Sherman¢¥s classification, 6 cases were belong to stage I, 4 cases stage II, 9 cases stage III, and. one case stage IV, respectively. Subjective symptoms were rectal heniorrhage, lower abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal pain, constipation,. tenesmus and indigestion in the
order of frequency. the injurde sites were in the rectum in 14 cases and in the sigmoid colon in 6 cases. An elapsed time between the initiation of radiation treatment and the onset of symptoms are 0 to 10 months. Indication for operation are stenosis with bleeding or fistula and pain. Colostomy or resection are carried out according to pathological situation.
In most cases, conservative treatment which are consists of bed rest, antibiotics, lower residue diet, spamolytic drugs, hydrocortison, and butazoline are applied initially for mild cases.
The results of treament were generally satisfactory.
