Abstract


Employing Magnus preparations of the tortoise intestinal strip, effects of some pharmacological drugs were studied.
1. Acetylcholine, a cholinergic agent, in minute doses caused contractions of the tortoise intestinal strip which were blocked by atropine.
2. Effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine, adrenergic drugs, were varied, but with larger doses some cases showed contractile responses.
3. With DMPP and nicotine, ganglionic stimulants, tortoise intestinal strip reacted with contractile responses, which were blocked by atropine and hexamethonium.
4. Histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine did not induce contractions, With 5-hydroxytryptamine some intestinal strips showed relaxant responses while with histamine almost none.
5. Drugs acting directly on smooth muscle cells; barium chloride, bradykinin, angiotensin, oxytocin and vasopressin, caused contractions of the tortoise intestinal strip.
The above results suggest that cholinergic nerves are well developed but adrenergic are not in the tortoise intestine. That 5-hydroxytryptamine and histamine which produce marked contractle effects in mammalian intestines by acting on the specific receptors, did not induce contractions in these tissues, suggests absence of specific receptors to 5-hydroxytryptamine and histamine in the tortoise intestine.
