Abstract

1. Oxytocin, whose occurrence in the posterior pituitary 91an4 of chicken has been established, but whose physiological roles are still obscure, is shown to be possessed of marked metabolic effects in the chicken.
2. Oxytocin elevates the levels of plasma free fatty acids (FFA) as well glucose in the chicken, differing from other species of laboratory animals.
3. As small a dose as 5 mU/kg oxytocin can elicit these effects, and the response increases proportionately with the increasing doses, to attain the maxima of 4375 increment for FFA and 20% for Glucose with 80 mU/kg intravenously.
4. No difference between sexes was observed in these effects.
5. This action, Bike the hypotensive one. of oxytocin cannot be abolished by depleting endogenous catecholamines with Reserpine pretreatment, thus suggesting a direct action of oxytocin.
6. Vasopressin, in contrast to oxytocin, lowers FPA and slightly elevates glucose level in the chicken, only with a large, pharmacological dose of 640mU/kg.
7. In view of the fact that catecholamines have no influence upon the FFA metabolism in the chicken, it is suggested that ozytriflin plars a physic-logical role in regulating FFA levels of plasma in the chicken.
