Abstract

Efferent pathways to visceral effectors are composed of preganglionic and postganglionic fibers, which are connected by synapses. On the morphological basis, it has been considered that preganglionic fibers are myelinated and· post-ganglionic unmyelinated. Recently, however, this generalization has been ind inpute.
Applying the Nakanishi´s osmic acid staining method, the author studied the nerve fiber constitution and the morphological characteristics of each nerve fiber of both preganglionic and postganglionic fibers. Results abtained were as follows;
1) Preganglionic fibers of the autonomic nerves(cervical sympathetirs, cervical vagus nerve, major splanchnic nerve and lumbar splanchnic nerve)are composed of the small myelinated fibers ranged from 2m to 4m and the large myelinated fibers varying from 5m to 20m in diameter. On the basis of the morphological features, these large myelinated fibers were somatic nerve fibers which are contained in the autonomic nerves.
2) Postganglionic fibers of the autonomic nerves(cevical sympathetics, major splanchnic nerve and lumbar splanchnic nerve)are consisted of both myelinated and unimyelinated fibers.
3) In gentral, the long axons of postganglionic sympathetic nerve, which carry the impulses to a long distance, seem to be myelinated.
