Abstract

In the urethane-anesthetixed rabbits the effect of GABA, intravenously or intraventriculary, on the blood pressure and heart rate were investigated.
1) Intravenous (1 to 20 mg/kg) or intraventricular (4 to 10 mg) GABA produced hypotension and bradycardia.
2) In the reserpine-treated rabbits, the blood pressure and geart rate were little affected by GABA.
3) In the iproniazid-treated rabbit, the cardiovascular responses to GABA were almost same as in the ono-treated ones. The duration of action of GABA, however, seemed to be shorter in the iproniazid-treate rabbits.
4) Intraventricular perfusion of norepinephrine (50㎍/min for 20 to 30min) did not affect the blood pressure level. During the intraventricular perfusion of norepinephrine, the cardiovascular responses to GABA were almost same as in the iproniazid-treated ones.
5) GABA inhibited the blood pressure elevation due to the carotid artery occlusion. The inhibition of the carotid occlusion reflex by GABA was not apparent in the iproniazid-treated rabbits, as well as in the rabbits, in which norepinephrine was perfused intraventricularly.
6) GABA attenuated the reflexive hypotension due to intravenous 5-hydroxytryptamine;while it did not affect the reflexive bradycardia due to it.
7) Basing on the above results, it was assumed that (1) the inhibitory effect of GABA on the cardiovascular function is partly associated with its system.(2) the inhibitory action of GABA was antagonized by elevation of norepinephrine level in the brain, (3) GABA did not affect the whole central nervous system evenly.
