Abstract

The nature of the adrenotropic receptors in the cardiovascular system of the tortoise (Amyda japonifa) was investigated.
1) The isolated atria of the tortoise showed the positive inot개pic and chronotropic responses to isoproterenol, epinephrine, norepinephrine and phenyl-ephrine.
2) The relative potencies of the above sympathomimetic amines were: isofroterenol>epinephrine-norepinephrine>phenylepkrine. Methozamine had no effects or depressed the atria.
3) Propranolol,´a beta adrenergic blocking agent, prevented the effects of the above amines: Regitine, an alpha adreneigic blocking agent, did not show the antagonizing effects.
4) A method for registration of the arterial blood pressure of the totoise was described.
5) Both epinephrine and norepinephrine showed the pressor effect, isoproterenol depressor one.
6) Phenoxybenzamine, an alpha blocking agent, prevented .the pressor effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine. The pressor effect of relatively large doses of epinephrine was reversed to the depressor one in the presence of phenoxybenzamine.
7) The depressor effect of isoproterenol was reversed to the pressor one in the presence of propranolol.
8) The depressor effect of epinephrine in the presence of phenoxybenzamine was prevented by treating the animal with propranolol, and the pressor effect of isoprotereriol in the presence of propranolol was with phenoxybenzamine.
9) A cetylcholine and vagal stimulation elicited the depressor response, which was blocked by atrpine. Angiotension showed the pressor effect.
10) The evidence indicates in the tortoise, as in the mammals, that the adrenergic drugs elicit the cardiac responses by receptor and their vasodireceptor action by the later action by the beta type.
