Free Fatty Acid and Lipatytic Activity in Devaioping Chick Embryos

Abstract


Changes in free fatty acid contents and lipolytic activities during development have been studied in the various tissues of chick embryos as well as in the egg white and yolk. Effects of heparin administration were also investigated.
1. Free fatty acid contents in the liver brain heart and gizzard were found to be high around the loth to 12th day of incubation, and thereafter rapidly decreased until the 15th day of incubation when the rate of decrease in free fatty, acid, changed abruptly. Thus, in the brain, heart and eyes the decreasing rate was slowed down while in the liver and brain it was accelerated.
2. The injection of heparin(10units) into the eggs 24 hours before caused an abrupt increase in free fatty acid of the liver, brain and heart around the 15th day of incubation, except for the gizzard where the marked decrease was resulted.
3. The egg white was found to contain a minutee amount of free fatty acid about one hundredth that found in the chick, embryo and in the yolk a maximum being reached around the 15th day of incubation. In the yolk .a maximal content was observed around the 14th day of incubation after which decrease a rapid decrease was noted.
The heparin administration resulted in a 1.2 to 2.0 fold increase of free fatty acid both in the egg white and in the yolk throughout the entire period of incubation.
4. Lipolytic activity possibly due to lipoprotein lipase, in the liver and brain could not be detected prior to the 14th day of incubation but occurred to
increase markedly thereafter.
Heparin inhibited the lipolytic activity slightly after the 14th day of incubation. However, it appeared to induce the activity at the 12th day of incubation.
5. From these results, it might be concluded that lipid metabolism in developing chick embryos undergoes a marked change around the 15th day of incubation
The increase in the content of lipid in chick embryos noted by others during the last week of the incubation period is also discussd with respect to the changes in free acid contents and lipoprotein lipase activities.
Heparin inhibited the lipolytic activity slightly after the 14th day of incubation. However it appeared to induce the activity at the 12th day.
5. From these results it might be concluded that lipid metabolism in developing chid embryos undergoes a marked change around the 15th day of incubation.
The increase in the content of lipid in chick embryos noted by others during the last week of the incubation period is also discussed with respect to the changes in free fatty acid contents and lipoprotein lipase activities.
