Abstract


Each of epinephrine, norepinephrine, isoproterenol, and serotonin inhibited competitively the rise of the intramammary pressure of rabbits to oxytocin. Phenoxybenzamine blocked selectively the inhibitory activity of epinephrine and norepinephrine; MJ-1999 did so on isoproterenol; methysergide so on serotonin. Each blocking agent had no effect on the oxytocin response. The inhibitory activity of the amine was also demonstrated in the isolated mammary strips. In these preparations, MJ-4999 and methysergide acted in the same manner as in the intramammary pressure response. Phenoxybenzamine however, weakened the oxytocin response of the strip and produced no blocking effect. In conclusion, it seems to be apparent that the interaction between oxytocin the amines and the blocking agents takes place in the receptor level in the myoepithelium, and it is suggested that the oxytocin action is in some way related to the adrenergic activity.
