Abstract

Adrenergic beta-receptor blocking agents(pronethalol, propranolol and MJ1999) antagonized the cardiac acceleration and depressor activity of isoproterenol in urethane-anesthetized rabbits. The vasodilator blockade was musch longer sustained than the cardiac blockade. The blocking agents generallyaugmented, the pressor activity of norepinephrine and epinephrine, and diminished the pressor activity of tyramine. The augmentation of the effect of norepinephrine and epinephrine and the attenuation of the tyramine effect were observed until after abolishment of the blocking activity on isoproterenol effect. Heart rate of rabbits was markedly decreased by the blocking agents, which seemed to be independent of their blocking property. These facts suggest different affinity of beta-receptor according to their location for the blocking agents, and it is obvious that the beta-receptor blocking agents have important actions unrelated to the blocking property.
