Abstract


1. The action of isoproterenol on renal function of the dog was investigated during various diuretic states, utilizing clearance, method. It was shown that after a transient antidiuresis concomitant with blood pressure depression, isoproterenol induces diuresis, natriuresis and increment in osmolar and freewater clearances with simultaneous increases in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal plasma flow (RPF).
2. This action varies widely with the initial diuretic state, being most active during water diuresis, less during infusion of isotonic saline, and entirely ineffective during osmotic diuresis with mannitol. This difference suggests that the diuretic action of isoproterenol is largely dependent upon the bemodynamic state of the kidney.
3 All the evidences indicate ´that the diuresis following isoproterenol is a result of increased GFR, which, in turn, brings about an increment in filtered load of sodium delivered to the reabsorbing sites, and there is no evidence indicating. a tubular action, ruling out the necessity of postulating an adrenergic ?-receptor in tubular transport mechanisms.
4. Nethalide, a ?-adrenergic blocking agent in a dose which completely abolished the depressor response to isoproterenol, could not influence the diuresis after isoproterenol.
